Host city information
15th Tour de China will be hold in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
Xinjiang is located in western part of the People’s Republic of China. It borders the Tibet Autonomous Region to the south and Qinghai and Ganshu provinces to the southeast. |
Xinjiang covers an area of 1.65 million km2, which is the largest in all the province-level administrative regions of China and takes up about a sixth of country's territory. About one-quarter of the area is covered by Dzoosotoyn Elisen Desert. The total population is about 19 million and two-third parts are non-Han ethnicities. It is known as one of the richest territory of China. Recently, China Western Development policy was adopted to boost spectacular economic development in Xinjiang.
Urumchi, capital of Xinjiang, is the largest city in the western half of China with a population about 1.7 million. ” Urumchi” in Mamchu, literally means "Beautiful ranch". The multiethnic city has very important geographic position of NW China. In history, it served as the key controlling section of the well-known Silk Road where have abundant tourist resources. |
Turfan
Turfan in Uyghur means "the lowest place", is a county-level city in Xinjiang. It has long been the center of a fertile oasis and an important trade centre. Turfan is located about 150km southeast of Urumchi on the northern side of the Turfan Depression.
Turfan is located about 150 km southeast of Urumchi , Xinjiang's capital, in a mountain basin, on the northern side of the Turfan Depression. The Turfan basin is a fault trough in the eastern part of the Tian-shan. It measures 245km from east to west, 75km from north to south. 60% of the area is mountain region, 30% is Gobi Desert and 10% is green zone. The city had over 250 thousand inhabitants in 2000, of which the majority was Uyghurs. Because of its geographical condition, the foehn phenomenon occurs and raises average temperature to 32.7 degrees in July. |
Korla
Korla is the capital of the Bayin’gholin Mogol Autonomous Prefecture, the largest prefecture in China.
It is about 47 km southwest from Karashahr (Yanqi) to Korla. Korla has long been the biggest centre in the region after Karashahr itself, having abundant water and extensive farmlands, as well as controlling the main routes to the south and west of Karashahr.
The Iron Gate Pass (Tiemenguan) leading to Karashahr is about 7 km (4 miles) north of the city and, as it was easily defended, played an important part in protecting the ancient Silk Roads from raiding nomads from the north. |

Transportation
The geographic position of Urumchi makes it very important in strategy. While now it is an unavoidable part of the railway leading to the second Eurasia Continental Bridge.

Urumchi is an administrative and commercial center at the junction of several caravan routes from the Central Asian Republics, Lanzhou (Gansu prov.), and Kashi (Kashgar). It is linked to the Chinese rail network via Lanzhou.
The Urumqi International Airport, one of China’s five major airports, has flights to West Asian and European countries. Air routes lead from Urumqi to Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Kashgar etc.
